BULLETIN FOR THE WEEK OF MAR. 2 – 9, 2014

Let God be praised and let His name be great among us today.

Let us worship Him with all of our being. Praise His name!

Recent archaeological research raised new questions about the Bible’s version of ancient history. Two researchers at Tel Aviv University studied the bones of camels found in an area of ancient copper mines in the Aravah Valley, south of the Dead Sea. They determined that camels were first used for mining near the end of the 10th century BC., and that this was the first evidence of domesticated camels in ancient Israel.

But this would be almost 1,000 years later than the time of the patriarchs, when camels first appear in the Bible. The most memorable account is the story of Abraham’s servant, Eliezer, in Genesis 24, who is sent by Abraham to find a wife for his son Isaac. He finds Rebecca, who not only draws water from a well for Eliezer, but also waters his 10 camels.

Their study was quickly used to claim that the Bible was written or edited long after the events it describes. But evangelical scholars say the claims are overblown. The use of camels for copper mining is an important discovery. “But to conclude from that they never had domesticated camels anywhere else in Israel in the 1,000 years before that is an overreach,” said Todd Bolen, professor at he Master’s College.

Titus Kennedy of Biola University said, “Those who adhere to a 12th century BC or later theory of domestic camel use in the ancient Near East, a great deal of archaeological and textual evidence must be either ignored or explained away.”

Leaping With Joy

One nice thing about having a young daughter is the frequent reminders she gives me about joyful trust. Debbie still jumps into my arms from the stairs, the porch, or the picnic table with a shout and a great big smile. We never have a long discussion ahead of time about whether or not I’ll catch her. She just looks at me and leaps.

As adults, we tend to become more cautious with age. That may be all right in driving a car or spending money, but it is stifling in our relationship with God.

When the disciples of Jesus wanted to know who was greatest in the Kingdom of heaven, the Lord pointed to a child as He spoke of conversion and humility: “Whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Mt. 18:4).

How I long to become more childlike each year with my heavenly Father instead of more hesitant, more calculating, more insistent that He guarantee the results before I’ll take a step of faith. Rather than becoming more cautious as I age, I want to become more daring in my walk with God. Instead of being obsessed with landing safely and looking good, I want to leap with humble, joyful abandon toward my heavenly Father’s arms.

BULLETIN FOR THE WEEK OF FEB. 2 – 9, 2014

We greet you in the name of Jesus, the most powerful name in the universe. It is in this name that we are gathered here today to experience His presence and power in our lives.

It is almost unbelievable, but we are now into the second month of the year 2014. Today is the 2nd day of February and the 33rd day of the year.

There is an old saying, “Time waits on no man.” That is very much true. The word of God urges us to redeem the time. This means that we are to use our time wisely; we are to use our time in God-honoring ways. God wants us to get maximum benefit out of the time which He has given us on this earth. He wants us to use our time to build our relationship with Him and to expand His kingdom. He wants us to use our time to achieve our highest potential for the glory of His name.

Jesus was so conscious of using His time for His Father’s glory that He made the following statement. “I must work the works of Him that sent me, while it is day: the night comes when no man can work.” (Jn. 9:4).

Since Jesus was so concerned about using His time wisely, we need to be concerned also.

True Riches

One day, a rich dad took his son on a trip. He wanted to show him how poor people lived. They spent time on the farm of a poor family. On the way home, dad asked, “Did you see how poor they are? What did you learn?” The son said, “We have one dog, they have four; we have a pool, they have rivers; we have lanterns at night, they have stars; we buy our food, they grow theirs; we have walls to protect us, they have friends; we have encyclopedias, they have the Bible.” The son said, “Thanks dad for showing me how poor we are.”

MORAL LESSON:

It’s not money that makes us rich; it’s the simplicity of having God in our lives.
